Frequently asked questions
- Is the cut exactly where I put the handles?
- Yes. The selection is re-encoded rather than copied, so the cut lands on the moment you chose instead of the nearest keyframe, which can be seconds away. That is why it takes longer than a copy would.
- How long does it take?
- Roughly in proportion to the piece you keep, not the file you started with, because only the selection is encoded. A short clip out of a long recording is quick; a ten minute selection is minutes of work on your own processor.
- Does the file get uploaded?
- No. The cut runs in your browser through a self-hosted build of ffmpeg. You can disconnect your network after the page loads and it still works.
- Can I keep the original quality?
- The audio and video are encoded again, so a cut is never bit-for-bit identical to the source. The settings are chosen to keep the difference invisible at normal viewing sizes.
