Output format: jpg
You downloaded an image, it arrived as .avif, and now the CMS, the print shop or a client's laptop will not touch it. Going back to JPG makes the picture boring again in the best possible way, readable by nearly every program written in the last thirty years. Your browser already knows how to read AVIF, so the decode happens right here.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I lose quality going from AVIF back to JPG?
- There is one extra lossy generation, so a side by side comparison at full zoom shows a difference. At normal size it is hard to spot, and the JPG is written at a high quality setting.
- Why is the JPG bigger than the AVIF was?
- AVIF simply compresses better. Storing the same picture in the older format needs more bytes, often two to three times as many.
- My AVIF has a transparent background, what happens to it?
- Transparency cannot survive inside a JPG, so those pixels come out white. Convert to PNG when the background has to stay clear.
