FLAC sounds perfect and costs a fortune in disk space: one album can run past a gigabyte, and phones, older players and car head units often refuse to play it at all. Trading it for a 192 kbps MP3 gives up a sliver of fidelity and buys back most of the drive. Each track is decoded and re-encoded here in the browser, with no upload queue to sit through.

Frequently asked questions

How much space does this actually save?
Expect the MP3 to land near a fifth to a quarter of the original size. A 40 MB lossless track usually settles somewhere around 8 MB.
Can I hear the difference?
Through laptop speakers, earbuds or a car system, almost certainly not. On good headphones during quiet passages some listeners can, which is why the encoder is set to a generous bitrate rather than a small one.
Are my tags and cover art carried over?
Title, artist and album tags are copied into the MP3 when the source carries them. Embedded artwork is dropped, because the picture rides in a video stream that an audio only conversion removes.
