FLAC sounds perfect and costs a fortune in disk space: one album can run past a gigabyte, and phones, older players and car head units often refuse to play it at all. Trading it for a 192 kbps MP3 gives up a sliver of fidelity and buys back most of the drive. Each track is decoded and re-encoded here in the browser, with no upload queue to sit through.
Frequently asked questions
- How much space does this actually save?
- Expect the MP3 to land near a fifth to a quarter of the original size. A 40 MB lossless track usually settles somewhere around 8 MB.
- Can I hear the difference?
- Through laptop speakers, earbuds or a car system, almost certainly not. On good headphones during quiet passages some listeners can, which is why the encoder is set to a generous bitrate rather than a small one.
- Are my tags and cover art carried over?
- Title, artist and album tags are copied into the MP3 when the source carries them. Embedded artwork is dropped, because the picture rides in a video stream that an audio only conversion removes.
