MKV is where downloads, disc rips and OBS recordings end up, and it is the one container that smart TVs, iPads, Premiere and most upload forms still turn away. Rewriting the file as MP4 with H.264 and AAC makes it play on the hardware you own. Subtitle tracks and font attachments are deliberately left out, because they are what makes this conversion fail in other tools.
Frequently asked questions
- What happens to the subtitles in my MKV?
- They are dropped. MP4 accepts only one narrow subtitle type, and the image based subtitles found in most rips cannot be translated into it, so carrying them would abort the job instead of finishing it.
- Which audio track do I get when the file has several?
- One track, chosen by the usual rule of best available, which normally means the version with the most channels. Picking a specific language track is not something this page offers yet.
- Can a full length movie convert in a browser tab?
- It will run, but plan on a long wait and use a desktop machine, because every frame is re-encoded in WebAssembly. Episodes and short clips are the comfortable case.
