Output format: gif
A GIF is still the only animation that autoplays silently in a Slack thread, a bug report, a marketplace listing or a README. This page takes the first 30 seconds of an MP4 and builds a looping GIF at 12 frames per second, scaled down to 480 pixels wide when the source is larger. A palette is measured from the clip itself before any frame is written, which is why the colors hold up instead of banding.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is my GIF bigger than the video it came from?
- GIF is an ancient format with no real motion compression, so every single frame costs you. Trimming down to the seconds that matter is by far the most effective thing you can do about size.
- Can I convert a clip longer than 30 seconds?
- The conversion stops at 30 seconds on purpose. Past that the output grows beyond what a browser tab can assemble and beyond what a chat app would accept, so trim the clip first in an editor.
- Does the audio survive?
- No, and it cannot: the format has no concept of sound. That is exactly why GIFs play in the places where an autoplaying video would be rude.
