Output format: avif
Both of these belong to the modern web, so this is a size upgrade rather than a compatibility rescue: AVIF normally lands 20 to 30 percent below a WebP of matching quality, which adds up on an image heavy page. The WebP is decoded by the browser and re-encoded by the bundled AV1 codec, all without leaving this tab. Alpha survives the trip, so cut out assets stay cut out.
Frequently asked questions
- Is the extra saving worth another lossy pass?
- On a hero image or a long gallery, usually yes. On a small icon the absolute saving is a couple of kilobytes and the generation loss is not worth paying.
- Which format has better support right now, WebP or AVIF?
- WebP has the longer track record, but every current browser engine reads AVIF as well. Support is no longer the thing that should decide between them.
- Can an animated WebP become an animated AVIF?
- Not on this page. The opening frame is encoded as a still image, so hold on to the original whenever the animation is the point.
